B.C. Literacy Council of the International Reading Association

BCLCIRA is the provincial council of the International Reading Association (an organization of nearly 100,000 members dedicated to the improvement of reading instruction and the promotion of lifetime reading habits) and is affiliated with the Canadian Network of International Reading Association Councils (CNIRAC).

Our mission: BCLCIRA will help develop, coordinate, and support goals and activities of the local councils in British Columbia to promote literacy throughout the province.

Purposes

  • to encourage the study of reading and writing at all educational levels
  • to stimulate and promote research in literacy development
  • to study the various factors that influence progress in literacy development
  • to heighten awareness of pertinent and significant literacy research and practices
  • to disseminate information relating to literacy
  • to support teacher training programs
  • to facilitate a literacy network
  • to advocate for literacy with government agencies
